Our dentist will usually make a recommendation on which type of Longmont dental fillings substance to use based on the size and location of the cavity. Each type of dental filling has its own particular benefits. Tooth-colored fillings are extremely aesthetically pleasing. They are made to perfectly color-match the tooth so no one will ever know that you have received a dental filling. These types of fillings are generally recommended for cavities that occur on the front of teeth that show when you speak or smile. Since these dental fillings are actually bonded to the tooth, they will strengthen the tooth. And, less tooth enamel needs to be removed when these type of dental fillings are applied. However, these dental fillings are not as strong as traditional fillings so they are not usually recommended for cavities that occur in areas on teeth that need to withstand vigorous chewing forces. Additionally, tooth-colored fillings can chip or crack more easily than silver amalgam fillings. Silver amalgam fillings on the other hand are faster, and therefore less expensive to install. Silver amalgam fillings are also stronger than tooth-colored fillings so they are usually recommended when a cavity is on the larger side. They are also usually the filling method of choice for the flat chewing surfaces of molars. If you are going to be getting a tooth-colored filling, you may want to contact your insurance company to make sure it covers this type of cavity treatment.
